Jamaica 2010 Vital Information
Destination: Mandeville Diocese, Jamaica
Flight information:
- Depart Saturday March 20, 2009
- Return Saturday, March 27, 2009
- Louisville or Nashville to Miami or Charleston to Montego Bay
Number of Volunteers: 7-11
- If we have more than 11 interested, students will be considered on their demonstration of commitment to fundraising projects.
Type of work:
We will be providing services for the Diocese of Mandeville. This will probably involved painting at a church or school and building a house. The house will be 1-2 rooms and supposedly anyone can help build the house without prior experience.
Cost: $1200 per person (this is hopefully a high estimate)
- Airfare $500
- Accommodations in Jamaica $300
- Tip and gift $25
- Donation to housing $357
The airfare and donation will depend on the number of people we have. To get a discount on the flight, we need 10 people. The diocese asks for a donation from the volunteers of $2500. This money funds the house we build while we are there. While it is considered optional, it is something that I think we need to do. (The $357 is the amount per person if we divide $2500 by 7 people. Hopefully we’ll have more people so it will be less per person.) There will be a $200 non-refundable deposit to the Newman House due September 15. This is to ensure that people who are serious about going get to go.
Accomodations:
We will be staying at a retreat center with 2-3 people in a room. Our hostess will be Meeckus, who will do our laundry. The retreat center is safe with a guard and guard dog on duty 24/7.
Free Time: No one is allowed to leave the group at anytime. It is not safe to do this. We will have structured free time that will include time at the beach.
Fundraising: the most important part of preparation!
GOAL: $0 per person in direct costs, deposit will be refunded if we raise enough money
- Each person will be expected to speak at their home parish and ask for donations.
- Each person will be expected to send appeal letters to friends, family, and MSU alumni.
- Each person will be required to work at MSU concession stands to raise money.
- Selling bracelets: we can make small bracelets at little cost and sell them for $1. We can sell them in front of the Curris Center, Faculty Hall, at other Campus Ministries, at Homecoming, etc. My friends did this a few years ago and made $1000 very quickly.
- More ideas needed!
